A note on where I’m coming from

Natural perfume is a small niche. Most people, understandably, reach for whatever they find in a department store or duty-free — and there’s nothing wrong with that. I hear from people on both sides of this. Some write to tell me that a fragrance they’ve worn for years has been reformulated and no longer smells quite the way they remember it. Others come to natural perfume because they’ve seen something on social media and are looking for an “all-natural” fragrance, without necessarily knowing what that choice involves.

That’s part of why I wanted to write this article. Not simply to rank a few bottles, but to open up a wider conversation about perfume: how it’s made, why fragrances change, what natural materials actually smell like, and what you might discover if you step outside the mainstream fragrance aisle.

This isn’t a synthetic-bad, natural-good article, and it isn’t trying to be. If you’re already happy with what you wear, there’s no reason to second-guess it. But if you’re curious about the natural side of this list, it’s worth reading with an open mind.

I’ll say plainly that I’m biased — it’s the craft I practise, and I happen to think botanical materials are more beautiful. But that’s a matter of taste, not a fact. It took me time to develop that preference; your nose adjusts to naturals the more you wear them, just as it adjusted to everything else you’ve ever worn.

There’s another part of that adjustment people don’t always talk about: the people around you are recalibrating too. If your partner is used to conventional fragrance, a natural perfume may smell unfamiliar at first — not necessarily better or worse, simply different. Give it some time. After a few weeks of wearing natural perfume, your own nose starts to recognise its subtler textures, and your partner’s nose can begin to do the same. What initially seemed unfamiliar can become the smell they associate with you.

Give it a month. Wear it regularly rather than judging it from a single spray, and see what happens. Perfume isn’t just something you smell on a test strip; it’s something you and the people close to you learn together.

I can’t promise you’ll prefer a natural fragrance to its mainstream equivalent. I can say that many people who give natural perfume a genuine try end up discovering a whole new side of fragrance — and some get rather hooked.

Does Cologne Actually Make You More Attractive? The Science

Short answer: yes, but mostly indirectly. A 2009 study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science found men were rated more attractive by women judging silent video footage — no scent reached the raters — after the men wore a pleasant fragrance beforehand. The effect was linked to a shift in the wearer’s own confidence and bearing, not the smell itself reaching anyone.

There’s a direct neural component too. Brain-imaging research pairing faces with scent, reviewed by Spence (2021), found a pleasant fragrance was associated with increased activity in the medial orbitofrontal cortex and ventral striatum — the same reward regions that light up for faces already judged attractive. A 2024 EEG study extended this further, finding a pleasant fragrance measurably shifted attractiveness and confidence ratings for both self- and other-perception, including women rating other women.

None of this means any single cologne guarantees a reaction — what it means is that wearing a fragrance you genuinely like changes how you carry yourself at least as much as it changes what anyone else smells.

Common ingredients across all 20

Confidence, not just chemistry.

The “pheromone” claim, correctly sized.

Androstadienone, found in male sweat, has been shown to keep women’s salivary cortisol elevated for over an hour after a single exposure — a real, measured physiological effect, but a modest one, not a switch that flips instant attraction. What a woman finds appealing in scent also isn’t fixed to begin with: a study on hormonal contraception found it can measurably shift which body-odour profiles women prefer, moving preference away from the genetically-dissimilar-partner pattern seen in naturally-cycling women. Where musk actually comes from.

Muscone — the compound behind musk’s warm, skin-like quality — occurs naturally in the male musk deer, where unmated males produce significantly more of it than mated ones, consistent with a genuine mate-signalling function rather than a human invention. None of this means any single cologne — synthetic or botanical — guarantees a reaction. It means the fragrances that do consistently earn one, across every era and every formulation approach, share the same underlying structure, and wearing one changes the wearer’s own bearing at least as much as it changes what anyone else smells.

Fresh & Citrusy

For when you want to feel inspired and positive in the morning.

There is some intriguing research behind that instinct to reach for citrus in the morning. Studies on lemon oil have found effects on brain activity and cognitive performance, including changes associated with attention and alertness. Other research suggests that citrus aromas can influence mood, with some studies finding increases in positive feelings alongside reductions in measures of tension and stress.

Of course, a fragrance isn’t a prescription, and everyone’s response to scent is personal. But there is something rather wonderful about the fact that the bright, energising character we instinctively associate with citrus has some science behind it too. It’s a natural fit for the beginning of the day — fresh, optimistic and ready to get things moving.

Warm & GourmanD

For when you’re in need of some warmth on a cold winter day.

There is some fascinating research behind vanilla’s reputation for comfort. In one semi-real-life study, exposure to ambient vanilla aroma produced a small but measurable reduction in heart rate compared with citrus, suggesting a more calming physiological response. There may be something particularly powerful about vanilla’s familiarity, too. In a 2025 brain-imaging study, smelling vanillin produced increased activity in the amygdala and parahippocampal gyrus — regions involved in emotional processing, recognition and memory. That may help explain why warm, gourmand notes can feel so immediately comforting — not simply pleasant, but evocative of something remembered. So when the temperature drops, perhaps there is a reason we instinctively gravitate towards the softest, sweetest things: vanilla feels a little like warmth in scent form.

Woody & Earthy

For when you want to feel more masculine and sexy.

This isn’t just branding — there is some fascinating biology behind our response to animalic and musky smells. Muscone, the principal odorous component of natural musk from the male musk deer, is part of the animal’s scent biology and has long been associated with sexual signalling and attraction. Our response to these animalic molecules can also be surprisingly individual. Research has shown that variations in the olfactory receptor gene OR7D4 affect how strongly people perceive androstenone, a steroidal compound with a musky, animalic character. Some people perceive it as strongly musky or unpleasant; others barely detect it at all. So when woody, earthy, resinous and animalic notes feel particularly sensual or masculine, there may be more going on than cultural conditioning alone. Part of the attraction begins with the biology of smell itself — and then personal experience, memory and culture take over.

And from a perfumer’s perspective, these deeper, heavier materials have another advantage: many woody, resinous and balsamic notes are naturally more tenacious on skin, helping create the lasting trail and confident impression that lighter top notes alone cannot provide.
