The best gender-neutral scents aren’t a compromise — they’re built around raw materials that are simply compelling on skin, without the shorthand of “this is for him” or “this is for her.” The brief is harder, and the results, when they work, are more interesting.
I’ve spent years working almost exclusively with botanical materials — resins, absolutes, essential oils, organic alcohol. That’s given me a particular lens on the fragrance industry: when I test a niche release, I’m thinking about what’s in it as much as how it smells.

What Makes a Unisex Perfume Worth Wearing {#what-makes}
The question isn’t whether a fragrance is marketed as unisex — it’s whether it actually works across different skin chemistries and personal styles. After years of formulating botanical fragrances and testing hundreds of niche releases, here’s what I look for:
Balance, not blandness.
The worst unisex perfumes strip out anything interesting to avoid offending anyone. The best ones are genuinely complex — they use bold materials (oud, leather, heavy florals, tobacco) but balance them so no single note dominates. As a perfumer, that balancing act is the hardest part of the brief.
Longevity without synthetic shortcuts.
Many mainstream fragrances achieve their sillage through synthetic musks and fixatives. Those ingredients work — but they carry health and environmental concerns I’m not willing to accept in my own formulations (more on this below). True longevity comes from resinous base notes, quality raw materials, and concentration.
Originality
A unisex scent should smell like itself, not like a category. If you can immediately place it as “a woody scent” or “a floral scent,” the perfumer hasn’t pushed hard enough. The fragrances I respect most — and the ones I try to make — resist that easy categorisation.

These are my own fragrances. I’ll be direct about that — but I’ll also be direct about what I set out to achieve with each one, and where I think they sit honestly against the niche picks above.
All Prosody London fragrances are composed in London from 100% botanical ingredients: organic alcohol, pure essential oils, and botanical absolutes, sourced to IFRA and Soil Association standards. No synthetic musks, no petrochemical derivatives, no phthalates. The constraint isn’t a marketing position — it’s how I work.

Lantern Reed — Best citrus-woody natural unisex

Our most unusual natural fragrance, and for many customers, the most compelling one. Freshly brewed coffee is the opening — rich and aromatic — but it’s balanced by the unexpected floral note of muscari (grape hyacinth), which gives it a fresh, almost spring-like quality underneath the warmth. The leather-sandalwood base is sophisticated and long-lasting. This fragrance challenges the idea that natural perfumery has to be light or simple.
Santal Foy — Best creamy woody natural unisex

Sandalwood is one of the materials where natural and synthetic differ most noticeably — real sandalwood has a creaminess and depth that synthetic versions approximate but don’t match. Santal Foy is built around that difference. The vanilla adds warmth without sweetness, the cedarwood keeps it grounded, and the natural musk (derived from ambrette seed — see our note on synthetic musk concerns below) provides a skin-like quality that makes this feel genuinely intimate. Berry Blitz is the fragrance I made for people who think they don’t like fruity scents. The raspberry and blackcurrant are vivid and genuinely juicy — but the patchouli underneath stops it reading as sweet or young. That combination is harder to pull off with natural ingredients than it sounds: synthetic fruity notes are easy to anchor; botanical ones need more careful balancing. The rose heart bridges the gap between the bright top and the earthy base, and the natural musk gives it a skin-like warmth that makes it feel intimate rather than loud. What’s Actually in Your Fragrance {#ingredients}
The 25 niche and luxury fragrances listed above represent genuine craft. But as interest in what goes into fragrances grows, it’s worth understanding the ingredients that appear even in expensive, well-regarded scents — and what the alternatives look like.
Synthetic musks: the longevity trade-off
Synthetic musks (including Galaxolide, Tonalide, Musk Ketone, and Musk Xylene) are used in the vast majority of commercial and niche fragrances to extend longevity and fix other notes to the skin. They work — but the science around them is increasingly difficult to ignore.
A 2025 review in the Journal of Chemical Health Risks found that Galaxolide, Tonalide, and Musk Ketone have been detected in wastewater and surface water globally, with low-level exposure shown to alter reproductive behaviour in aquatic animals. A separate critical review in Environmental Science and Technology identified dermal contact from personal care products as the dominant human exposure pathway for synthetic musks — accounting for 82–93% of total daily intake — with particular risks noted for pregnant women and infants.
The European Chemicals Agency has designated Musk Xylene a substance of very high concern. Both Musk Xylene and Musk Ketone have been detected in human breast milk samples in multiple independent studies.
The natural alternative I use: Ambrette seed absolute provides a genuinely skin-like, musky quality without any of these concerns. It’s what I use in my own formulations — you can read more about natural musk alternatives in perfumery on the Prosody blog.
Iso E Super (OTNE): the amplifier
Iso E Super is widely used in niche perfumery — including several fragrances on this list — to create a warm, woody “skin scent” effect. Under EU CLP classification it’s a listed skin sensitiser (H317), and the European Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety has recommended it for inclusion in updated fragrance allergen labelling requirements.
If you have sensitive skin or have ever noticed a fragrance causing irritation you couldn’t explain, Iso E Super is worth investigating. Our fragrances contain none.
Petrochemical-derived ingredients
A 2018 NOAA study published in Science found that VOCs from petrochemical-based scented products generate roughly the same volume of atmospheric pollution as burning petroleum for fuel. A 2025 report by Breast Cancer Prevention Partners found that every one of 25 tested fragranced consumer products emitted VOCs classified as toxic or hazardous under federal law.

What makes a unisex perfume actually unisex?
Not marketing — chemistry. A genuinely unisex fragrance balances materials that read as neither conventionally masculine nor feminine: woody notes that aren’t aggressive, florals that aren’t soft, spice that adds warmth rather than gender coding. The best unisex fragrances are simply interesting on skin, regardless of who’s wearing them.
Are unisex perfumes more versatile?
Yes — and more than just occasion-versatile. Because they’re formulated to work across a wider range of skin chemistries, they tend to perform more consistently. They’re also better for layering. Do natural unisex perfumes last as long as synthetic ones?
Honestly, natural fragrances typically have a shorter projection radius than synthetics — but they evolve more interestingly on skin and wear closer to the body, which many people prefer. Which synthetic ingredients should I look out for?
