There’s no legally binding definition of “clean perfume,” so the term varies by brand. In practice, it typically means avoiding synthetic musks, phthalates, and undisclosed fragrance blends in favor of botanical materials. What does clean perfume actually mean?

There is no legally binding definition of clean perfume — which is precisely why the term gets abused so freely. Many brands that market themselves as “clean” choose to avoid ingredients that have been the subject of environmental or toxicological debate, although there is no single accepted definition of clean perfume. That typically means avoiding:

Some petroleum-derived fragrance ingredients have been studied for environmental persistence or bioaccumulation, leading certain brands to avoid them.

The research on synthetic musks is the most developed. They have been detected in human blood and fat tissue long after exposure. Some older synthetic musks have shown endocrine-related activity in laboratory or animal studies. Whether those findings translate into meaningful health effects at typical consumer exposure levels remains an active area of research.
