What Is Orris Root?

Orris comes from the rhizomes of the iris, mainly Iris pallida grown in Tuscany. The roots are dried and aged for three to five years before distillation, as their scent develops slowly over time. It is one of the most expensive materials in perfumery.

How Perfumers Use Orris Root

Perfumers use orris to add elegance and a soft, powdery texture. It pairs beautifully with rose, violet leaf, woods and vanilla, and gives a cool sophistication to green blends.

Why orris takes years

Fresh iris roots have almost no scent. Only after years of slow drying do the irones form. That patience, along with low yields, explains orris butter’s high price.
