Seaweed

What does seaweed smell like in perfume? Seaweed smells salty, mineral and marine, like a breeze off the rocks at low tide. It gives a perfume a genuine sense of the sea, without the synthetic ‘ocean’ notes common in modern fragrances.

What Is Seaweed?

Seaweed absolute is extracted from bladderwrack, Fucus vesiculosus, a brown seaweed gathered on Atlantic coasts. It is one of the few natural materials that can bring a true marine note to perfume.

What Does Seaweed Smell Like?

Here is how strongly each facet of seaweed comes through, from our own smelling-strip notes.

Salty

Sea spray and salted skin.

Mineral

Wet rocks and sand.

Marine

The iodine-rich air of the shore.

Green

A damp, vegetal undertone.

How Perfumers Use Seaweed

Perfumers use seaweed in small amounts to add realism to aquatic compositions, pairing it with citrus, herbs and woods. It gives depth to fresh scents and a natural, salty skin effect.

A natural marine note

Most ‘ocean’ perfumes rely on synthetic molecules such as Calone. Seaweed absolute offers a natural alternative, with a more complex, mineral and genuinely coastal character.
