What Is Rosemary?

Rosemary, Salvia rosmarinus, is an evergreen Mediterranean shrub whose name means ‘dew of the sea’, as it grows wild near the coast. The oil is distilled from its flowering tops, mainly in Morocco and Tunisia.

How Perfumers Use Rosemary

Rosemary was a key ingredient in the first eaux de cologne and remains a classic in fresh, aromatic perfumes. It pairs well with citrus, lavender and woods.

Rosemary and the first colognes

Hungary Water, one of the earliest recorded perfumes, was built on rosemary. Later, the eau de cologne added it to citrus and neroli, a pairing that still feels fresh today.

For rosemary at its most expressive, try Neroli Nuance. Rosemary adds an aromatic freshness to a citrus opening with green mandarin, blood orange and neroli.
