Petitgrain

What does petitgrain smell like in perfume? Petitgrain smells green, woody and gently floral, like crushing a leaf from an orange tree. It is fresher and drier than neroli, with a slightly bitter citrus edge that gives colognes their sophistication.

What Is Petitgrain?

Petitgrain is distilled from the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree, Citrus aurantium. Its name means ‘little grain’ in French, because it was once distilled from the small, unripe fruits. Paraguay is now its main source.

What Does Petitgrain Smell Like?

Here is how strongly each facet of petitgrain comes through, from our own smelling-strip notes.

Green

Crisp, leafy and freshly crushed.

Woody

A twiggy, dry note from the branches.

Floral

A soft hint of orange blossom.

Bitter

A pleasantly bitter citrus edge.

How Perfumers Use Petitgrain

Petitgrain is a backbone of classic colognes, bridging citrus top notes and floral hearts. Perfumers use it to add a natural, leafy freshness and to make orange blossom and neroli feel more alive.

One tree, three scents

Petitgrain, neroli and orange blossom all come from the same bitter orange tree. Petitgrain is the leaf, neroli the steam-distilled blossom and orange blossom the solvent-extracted flower, each with its own character.
