What Is Eucalyptus?

Eucalyptus oil is steam-distilled from the leaves of Eucalyptus globulus, the Tasmanian blue gum. Its main molecule, 1,8-cineole, gives the familiar cool, camphor-like freshness.

What Does Eucalyptus Smell Like?

Here is how strongly each facet of eucalyptus comes through, from our own smelling-strip notes.

Cool

Brisk, icy freshness.

Camphor

A clean, medicinal clarity.

Green

A leafy, woody note from the foliage.

Minty

A soft, mint-like coolness.

How Perfumers Use Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is used sparingly in fine fragrance because it is so powerful. A trace makes florals feel airy and lifts powdery notes like mimosa, keeping them fresh rather than heavy.

Used with a light hand

In large amounts eucalyptus reads as medicinal, but in perfume it is used in tiny doses, where it simply adds a sense of air and space.
