Mandarin

What does mandarin smell like in perfume? Mandarin smells sweet, juicy and soft, like peeling a ripe mandarin in winter. It is the gentlest of the citrus notes, with a hint of florality that makes it feel warm and friendly rather than sharp.

What Is Mandarin?

Mandarin oil is pressed from the peel of Citrus reticulata. Green mandarin, picked early, is zesty and sharp; red mandarin, picked ripe, is sweeter and rounder. A trace of methyl N-methylanthranilate gives mandarin its distinctive, almost floral sweetness.

What Does Mandarin Smell Like?

Here is how strongly each facet of mandarin comes through, from our own smelling-strip notes.

Juicy

Sweet, ripe fruit that feels full of sunshine.

Sweet

A soft, candied warmth.

Floral

A delicate, orange-blossom-like nuance.

Green

A fresh, leafy edge, strongest in green mandarin.

How Perfumers Use Mandarin

Mandarin brings sweetness and roundness to a citrus accord, softening sharper notes like lemon and grapefruit. Perfumers use it to open fruity florals and gourmands, where its juicy warmth leads naturally into creamy or spicy hearts.

Green mandarin vs red mandarin

Green mandarin is picked before it ripens and smells sharp, zesty and green. Red mandarin is harvested ripe and smells sweeter and juicier. Our Neroli Nuance uses green mandarin for a brighter, sparkling start.

Smell Mandarin in Prosody London Perfumes

For mandarin at its most expressive, try Neroli Nuance. Green mandarin opens the scent with blood orange and neroli, creating a bright, summery citrus-floral. You will also find mandarin in A Capella Ray, Mocha Muscari, Paper Flower Fan, Pizzicato Bliss and Whistle Moon.
